Now that we have an understanding of what coaching is and what coaching is not, let’s make an attempt to describe the work of a coach.
The following are some of the things a coach does in a coaching relationship:
- Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve.
- Encourages client self–discovery.
- Changes a client’s world view from that of fear to possibility.
- Helps the client to see their world differently.
- In tune with the nuances of voice, emotion and energy, and is intent on receiving everything the client communicates. A coach listens to the very best in others, even when they can’t hear it in themselves.
- Is a collaborative and co-creative partner in a client’s journey to achieve their vision and goals.
- Elicits client–generated solutions and strategies.
- Holds the client responsible and accountable.
With this understanding, it is believed that the work of coaches will be further valued and appreciated.
