Now that we have an understanding of what coaching is and what coaching is not, let’s make an attempt to describe the work of a coach.

The following are some of the things a coach does in a coaching relationship:

  1. Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve.
  2. Encourages client self–discovery.
  3. Changes a client’s world view from that of fear to possibility.
  4. Helps the client to see their world differently.
  5. In tune with the nuances of voice, emotion and energy, and is intent on receiving everything the client communicates. A coach listens to the very best in others, even when they can’t hear it in themselves.
  6. Is a collaborative and co-creative partner in a client’s journey to achieve their vision and goals.
  7. Elicits client–generated solutions and strategies.
  8. Holds the client responsible and accountable.

With this understanding, it is believed that the work of coaches will be further valued and appreciated.
